Album Review: Kodaline 'Coming Up For Air'

Before I begin, I want to make a prediction... this is going to be a HUGE year for Kodaline. Come this time next year at The Brit Awards 2016 I think these guys are going to be nominated left right and centre!

Now to the album. This post is basically going to be a long list of reasons why I love the album so much. I can't help myself though.

To be honest, I didn't have high hopes (*cough cough*) for this album. Although I love their songs before this, they are all very slow songs, which had the potential to translate into something a little boring when put on an album.

You have no idea how glad I am though that I was VERY wrong.

It has a lots of feelings to it. It is very acousticy, with a slight rock n roll vibe to it (at least I think it does). It is also incredibly anthemic. I bet they are unbelievable live.

A huge thing I noticed, even from the very first time I heard 'Honest', I thought they are massively inspired by Coldplay. Normally I wouldn't like this becuase I am a gigantic Coldplay fan and don't like other bands copying them. However, Kodaline in no way sound like a copy. They are so original, but the influence it still there. There is nothing wrong with admiring and being inspired by other artists.
The best way I can describe it, is he sounds like a polished Chris Martin.

I also felt a slight Paolo Nutini vibe to it in certain songs, like 'Human Again'. It makes it very relaxing and actually kind of sexy.

The other reason i'm so obsessed with this album is it is very guitar heavy, and if you have read any of my other album reviews, you will know how much of a sucker I am for killer guitar playing.

It really is a really excellent album, and actually my favourite album for a while. I would seriously recommend it.

And if you are still unsure, check out their recent Live Lounge performance of Ed Sheeran's 'Sing' here. It'll change your mind for sure.

Buy the album here.

My favourite songs from the album...
Love Will Set You Free
Play the Game
Coming Alive
Human Again
The One
