Album Review: Pharrell Williams 'GIRL'

I have become completely obsessed with Pharrell Williams after his incredible year in 2013 with Blurred Lines and Get Lucky, and then more recently with his hit Happy. Pharrell Fever is most definitely sweeping the globe and I couldn't be more happy about it. I recently heard in an interview that he is 40! How crazy is that??? Who would have thought that the guy from N.E.R.D would become this huge.
Inevitabley, my excitement went through the roof, when he announced his album GIRL would be coming out on the 3rd March. I went straight and bought it, with very high expectations, especially as he is known for writing and producing such massive hits for other people (like Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dog, and many many more). I think it is fair to say there was a lot of pressure on him to do a good job.
To be honest, it has taken me a while to get into the album. To begin with I felt some tacks were a bit samey. However, I soon saw sense and I really am beginning to get why it was number 1 in over 60 countries.
The influence from people such as Nile Rodgers, and the 'funk' genre definitely comes through, but in a more contemporary way. The album as a whole feels a bit like Pharrell's diary as he has just done exactly what he wants, how he wants. There are some great collaborations on the album too, including Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, and Miley Cyrus.
Overall, I think it is a really great album. It isn't quite my fave of the year yet, but it's pretty close.
If you are not sure about getting it yet, listen to Marilyn Monroe, It Girl, and Gust of Wind - they should push you into buying it.
